I came across this photo today and thought it was a great message. We live in such a materialistic world that we put the cost of “things” before the cost of ourselves and our health. Are you guilty of having an expensive purse or shoe fetish. Maybe the guys out there are addicted to buying watches or the latest video games or car accessory. As the owner of a CrossFit gym I hear so much talk about how expensive CrossFit is. This is probably one of the top reasons that people either do not make the commitment to join or they join for a month and then leave because of the cost. I think this picture and message has hit home to me because I have been cutting down on my own expenses and am frustrated about paying for things that I honesty just really don’t need. For example, the average satellite/cable/TV bill is $100+ a month. A typical CrossFit membership is around that same cost. What is your cable doing for your health, the expensive purse or shoes? What is your CrossFit membership doing for your health? It sounds silly but it’s true, do you really watch all 300+ channels on your TV? Can you cut that down and use that money for your health? Eat out less and invest in real food and learn to cook and eat delicious healthy real food meals. Whether your savings translates into then investing in a $30/month gym membership or a more expensive CrossFit membership, you should really be investing in your health and not things. Any exercise is better than non but the saying you get what you pay for works for gym memberships too. Wonder what you get for that $30/month gym membership vs. the cost of CrossFit. Your typical “globo” gym could really care less if you show up. They want your money and that’s it! CrossFit gets the bad rap as being a cult and for those of us that are in the cult, we really are ok with that term. If calling a place that holds you accountable, that wants you there and will find you if you are not there, provides a support system, nutritional counseling, makes you stronger and fitter and helps you mentally and emotionally all for the price of your cable bill, well then I am proud to be an owner and member of this cult. As a population we are living longer and as the cost of healthcare and what it actually covers is diminishing people need to be more proactive and invest in their health. So, the next time you go splurge on that $200 purse or sit down to watch your $100+ TV show make sure you have been investing in your health before you complain about how expensive a gym membership is. Before you quit CrossFit after a month because it was too expensive or you didn’t get results ask yourself, “can I go out a few less times a month for dinner and expensive drinks, did I really put in the effort, did I show up and give it my all?” Most likely the answers to these question is NO! I assure you the cost of obesity and type 2 diabetes is way more than a CrossFit membership will ever cost you.
